Music helps me piece together all of my writing when I’m working on a book, but for Industry Darling it was more important than usual. It is, after all, a book that revolves around the music industry. Songs like “Royals” and “Acapella” inspired Ryman’s character while songs like “Otherside,” “The Monster,” and (especially) “Life is Cinema” inspired Slate. I listened to “Devil’s Backbone” and “Love the Way You Lie” on repeat when I wrote Ryman and Slate’s relationship. The “Blank Space/Style” mashup is what Sam + Grey sound like in my head (also, it’s a very fitting mashup for the two of them), while “I Knew You Were Trouble” was a staple when revisiting Ryman’s better judgement.
Anyway, here are the songs that inspired Industry Darling –– I even included the YouTube links to the ones that weren’t available on Spotify.
